The Journey

Orthodontics refers to techniques used to correct the alignment of teeth. Correct alignment is not only about having a beautiful smile, but it is also crucial for proper jaw function and overall dental cleanliness.

Pedro offers a wide variety of the latest orthodontic treatments for patients of all ages. He provides several types of braces, ranging from traditional metallic braces to virtually invisible systems like Damon® clear braces and Invisalign (Clear aligners). Lingual braces are also available for patients who require more discretion.

Consultation

Any orthodontic treatment begins with a consultation. After a brief examination Pedro will assess your needs and answer any questions or concerns you might have about your orthodontic treatment options and how they can positively impact your oral health and overall well-being. Based on this examination, an estimate for treatment may be provided at this time.

Full case assessment

Pedro will conduct a thorough examination and assessment of your mouth and teeth, which will take about an hour. This appointment includes diagnostic record taking such as images and impressions of your mouth and teeth.

Following a discussion of your needs, expectations, options, and objectives, you’ll receive your treatment and payment plan.

Treatment

Your treatment will take place in comfortable surroundings and be performed with the utmost care and attention.

  • Fitting

Pedro will fit braces of your choice and provide you with detailed care and usage instructions which includes a list of foods to avoid while wearing braces. You may feel a little discomfort until you adjust to wearing the appliance. This is normal and should subside after a couple of days.

  • Regular check-ups

Pedro will review how your treatment is progressing after one month and will ask you to return every four to eight weeks for regular reviews. If your braces are adjusted, you may feel some discomfort for a day or two as there will be more pressure being applied to your teeth. Over-the-counter parecetamol can help to alleviate any discomfort.

  • Removal

Once you are happy with how your teeth look and how your bite feels, your braces can be removed. This includes removing all your brackets and polishing dental glue from your teeth.

  • Photos and impressions

Final photographs and impressions are taken after your braces have been removed. These are often used to make your removable retainers.

  • Retention

After your braces are removed, you’ll need to wear a retainer to keep your teeth in the correct position, preventing them from relapsing. Pedro will discuss the different types of retainers available and advise which one is best for your case.

Aftercare

Pedro will examine your teeth at regular follow-up appointments for your peace of mind.

Orthodontic Treatment Systems

There is a range of treatment options available to treat orthodontic issues. They are different systems, and these must be used in conjunction with expert knowledge and care to achieve effective results.

All orthodontic treatment systems work in a similar way, whereby they apply constant but gentle force to the teeth to gradually move them into an optimal position. Each system has specific designs and characteristics. Since treatment times are usually long, it is essential to understand how each system works and what to expect, so you can make an informed decision as to which will suit you best, based on your needs and preferences. The following questions and answers are critical during this decision-making process.

Do I want a fixed or removable treatment system?

Fixed braces cannot be removed and require adjustments every four to eight weeks, while removable braces can be taken out by the patient and require review visits every six to twelve weeks. Removable braces must be worn for 20-22 hours a day to be effective.

How discreet is each system?

The gold standard for invisible braces is lingual braces, although the Invisalign® and Damon® systems are very discreet as well. Metallic and clear fixed braces are more visible but cost less.

Will it affect my speech?

Lingual braces often alter the speech because they are placed behind the teeth. However, patients typically become accustomed to wearing them after a couple of months. Invisalign® may also initially impact your speech.  Fixed traditional braces do not impact your speech.

How long will the treatment take?

Many factors can affect treatment length, but under the care of a good orthodontist, most options should take between one and three years to complete.

How much does this treatment cost?

Lingual braces are often the most expensive solution followed by Damon® and Invisalign®. Traditional metallic braces offer the best value for orthodontic treatment in most cases.

Do I want an improvement or the best possible results?

Orthodontists have more control with fixed braces, so they are often the preferred method for achieving the best results. Lingual braces and Invisalign® are used for aesthetic reasons, so have some limitations and may take longer to achieve results. Pedro can guide you as to which option works best for your circumstances, based on your case history, goals and personal preferences.
