A dental emergency is classified as any serious situation that needs professional dental treatment immediately. The main types of emergencies seen are:

• Lost teeth

  It’s sometimes possible to save a tooth if action is taken within the first hour. Keep the tooth in your mouth or milk and come in as quickly as possible.

• Damaged teeth

  Try to save any pieces that have broken off your tooth and come in immediately. Apply a piece of gauze if the area is bleeding and place a cold compress against your cheek to keep the swelling down.

• Severe toothache

  If a toothache is so severe that it keeps you from sleeping, eating, working or functioning, it’s best to get it treated without delay.

• Facial swelling

  This could be a sign of infection, allergy or oral disease. Waiting to have it treated could mean the difference between containing the inflammation or allowing it to spread to other parts of the jaw, mouth and

  Broken braces could cause injury to your mouth. Cover the broken section with a cotton ball and come in to have it fixed. Don’t try to cut the wire or it may become lodged in your gums or throat.
